3PA students explored a short story by author Cynthia Rylant entitled Shells. The story is about a boy, Michael, who moves in with his Aunt Esther. In the beginning of the story, there was much conflict between the two main characters. In the end, they were brought together by a new family pet, Sluggo, a hermit crab. For much of the text, Sluggo the crab didn't come out of his shell until the final line. The narrator states, "The crab, finished with the old home that no longer fit, was coming out of its shell." | |
As we read, 3PA examined the text to explore the concept of change and the author's message. Students also analyzed the ending and how the crab might symbolize the main characters, Michael and Aunt Esther. We also considered how the crab coming out of its shell can relate to the human characters changing and coming out of their own "shells". This coming week, students will continue to consider ways that people, like crabs, eventually outgrow their shells. Individuals can wear many shells throughout their lifetime: sadness, fear, worry, and frustration.
Consider talking with your student at home about "shells" you have previously worn. Share who or what helped you to "come out of your shell" and how that has changed you.
