Imagine! What would life be like? Our world is full of language! When we think about language, we are thinking about grammar.
The captain of a ship uses grammar to command, the man on the wharf uses grammar as he works, and sailors on the seawall tell their secrets to one another - all in grammar.
With grammar, we talk of fishing, and talk while fishing, and eat fish while talking. Sometimes we even fish for words!
There are many things, and so there are many words. But how many kids of words are there? How many kinds are needed to build our language?
Students had the opportunity to estimate this and the numbers were astounding! Some estimated 2,000 or even 10 million kinds would be needed.
But our complex language can be develop with just 8 parts! These 8 parts are the Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Adverb, Verb, Preposition, Conjunction, and Interjection.
Academic writing depends upon strong knowledge of grammar concepts and standards. Punctuation rules are grammar-intensive. Vocabulary knowledge and usage depends upon a comprehension of the parts of speech.
3-5PA began the year with a grammar study to allow for follow-up application and practice throughout the year. Although grammar is explored each year, the sentences and texts in which we analyze increase in complexity. Through the examination of more complex literature, students are able to experience ways in which words take on different roles depending upon the way they are used by the author.
This week, 3-5PA will continue their exploration of the 8 Parts of Speech. One particular challenge that we've discovered is how many words become different parts of speech depending upon their role in a sentence:
Try This! What part of speech is well in each sentence below?
