Academic writing depends upon strong knowledge of grammar concepts and standards. Punctuation rules are grammar-intensive. Vocabulary knowledge and usage depends upon a comprehension of the parts of speech.
3-5PA began the year with a grammar study to allow for follow-up application and practice throughout the year. Although grammar is explored each year, the sentences and texts in which we analyze increase in complexity. Through the examination of more complex literature, students are able to experience ways in which words take on different roles depending upon the way they are used by the author. This week, 3-5PA will continue their exploration of the 8 Parts of Speech. One particular challenge that we've discovered is how many words become different parts of speech depending upon their role in a sentence: Try This! What part of speech is after in each sentence below? 1. He left soon after. 2. She takes after her mother. 3. I went to bed after I had dinner. 1. adverb 2. preposition 3. conjunction |
