3PA recently transitioned into their new unit of study: Ancient Egypt - The Gift of the Nile. This unit is designed around the idea that human civilizations develop and sustain themselves as a collection of interdependent systems. The civilization of ancient Egypt forms the content of the unit, with exploration of systems of agriculture, economics, language, and leadership in this ancient culture. Students will broaden their understanding by comparing the Egyptian civilization with aspects of their own lives and communities.
This past week, 3PA explored the meaning of civilizations and ways in which civilizations develop. Students used a website that simulated a problem solving scenario that guided students toward an understanding of how civilizations develop as well as the qualities or characteristics that affect the development of a civilization. The tool added value to our study by enabling the students to make their own choices in the simulation while discovering information regarding the impact of their decision. The site also allowed students to be in a real-world problem-solving situation, fostering collaborative and critical conversations among classmates. Students also used Google docs to log their reactions and reflections during the simulation.
