Each day, 3-5PA begins class by analyzing a complex sentence. The sentences students analyze are different for each grade level. We currently analyze parts of speech but will continue to add our knowledge of parts of the sentence, phrases, and clauses throughout the school year. Our Sentence Starter schedule allows a different student each day to be responsible for leading our collaborative conversation about a sentence we are studying. Starters begin jotting the sentence on the SmartBoard, all classmates analyze the sentence on the back of their binders using dry erase markers, and then the Starter collects all ideas that were generated about the sentence. Our group discusses the findings, uses evidence from our knowledge of the 8 parts of speech to support the interpretation and analysis, then comes to a consensus about the language used in the sentence. Ask your student when they are scheduled to be the Sentence Starter! Consider analyzing their sentence of the day at home together. |
