Before winter break, students had the opportunity to study a few works by artist M.C. Escher. We began by viewing the woodcutbelow entitled Night and Day.
Students examined the piece and discussed their observations, ways the image conveys change, and its symmetrical features. Prior to revealing the piece's title, students had the opportunity to create their own effective titles. Some of their titles included: Changing Shadows, Two Dimensions, and one student even guessed Day and Night! Students also explored the concept of tessellations and we uncovered ways Escher used tessellations in Day & Night, as well as another one of his prints: Metamorphose. This week, we have been exploring a text by author/illustrator David Wiesner entitled Free Fall. In this wordless picture book, a boy's dream transforms ordinary objects into an adventure. Wiesner uses ideas and images that are similar to Escher's work - including tessellations and evidence of change. An interesting feature of the text is that the pictures were created end to end as one continuous mural (like Escher's Metamorphose). You're welcome to view the text by clicking the video below:
